Portraiture has always been an intense interest of mine for a myriad of reasons. What is it about the human face that has captured and held my interest for a lifetime? What is it about visual conversation with another human being that tells us more about their essence, the intensity of purpose, or the meaning that words alone cannot convey?
The human face, the face of any other sentient being, has a complex network of tiny muscles surrounding the eyes and mouth, working in symphony to soundlessly communicate phenomenal information. This performance is found only in humans to this extent. Yes, I’ve seen it in my pet dog Lulu—in her eyes when she knew something was about to happen to us. But only in her eyes, only in the silence of her breathing. In the face, we may see confidence, tension, weariness, joy, resilience, contemplation, fear, distrust, struggle, mystery, depth, and suspicion.
